Here's an idea...

While our dear friends over at that other fine blog are on about keeping livestock in Cheverly (an idea, by the way, well worth exploring), I'm going to propose another civic idea: Cheverly Volunteer Month. The town should recognize the important efforts that volunteer groups make to improve our neighborhoods -- the great sense of civic pride and responsibility is one of wonderful things about Cheverly. Volunteer groups could use the platform to highlight their efforts and needs for new people. It seems like the same people are always volunteering -- every group can use new faces and new ideas! I really think that if more people were aware of the needs of our community groups, they'd volunteer, too. The best part? It wouldn't cost anything and it could engender a lot of good will. Most of this could take place in the newsletter and on town blogs. I'll even volunteer to coordinate. See? I'm volunteering again.

Volunteerism is something that can be close to home and benefits everyone in the community. National Volunteer Week was celebrated in April ("A Celebration of People in Action"). Maybe next year, Cheverly could precede Peace Month with Volunteer Month?

I like this idea! Perhaps it could be a market theme? Groups could have tables and/or a handout could be created listing different organizations/volunteer activities and contact information. Of course all that requires volunteer coordination!!

Can't it supersede Peace month...who needs that anyways, waste of a whole page in the newsletter! Go Volunteers! What do you want me to do, sign me up sister!
