Cheverly Community Market Opens This Saturday!

It's been a long winter and we've missed all our friends at Cheverly Community Market. Well, the wait is over...opening day is this Saturday, 8:00am-noon, at the Cheverly Community Center.

The Market blog has all sorts of updates about new vendors, who's bringing what... Here's what you can count on: fantastic music, fair trade coffee, great breads, pastries and tortillas, gorgeous meats, Maryland's best seafood (including oysters and crabs this week!), Elk Run Winery, Pax River Alpacas (lovely yarns!), and, of course, the very best in local produce. Get ready for strawberries!

Here's a plan for a perfect Cheverly summer weekend:
Friday night -- CHVprom
Saturday morning -- Cheverly Community Market
Saturday afternoon -- Cheverly Swim & Racquet Club
Saturday night -- relaxing dinner (made with Cheverly Community Market booty)
Sunday -- work in your Cheverly Community Gardens plot, drink some damn fine tea from local boys Andrews & Dunham, take a picnic (full of more Cheverly Community Market goodies) to the pool and laze the afternoon and evening away.
I can't think of a better way to spend an early summer weekend in the CHV.

(By the way, that's Cheverly resident Tom Smith. His students love him so much that they made a FaceBook fan page for him. If you know him, you already know why! If you don't know him, visit the Market -- you're sure to meet Tom.)

CHVProm is this Friday!

CHVProm 2009 is THIS FRIDAY (that's May 29),
8:00pm to midnight in the Gym at Cheverly Town Hall.
Tickets are still available, but you need to act fast!
The CHVProm Team will provide the band, the location, ice, mixers and flatware. You provide your sparking personality, sense of fun, adventure, community spirit, some tasty food and drink, and willingness to dance (that last one is negotiable).
This year's DIY prom features:
* Music by Cheverly's very own "prominent and notorious" Beatles cover band Soul Revolver. You may have caught them at local New Year's parties, the Surf Club, or doing good works for a local preschool's Music at School Benefit Series. They're fun, they're loud, they're good citizens, and the rock.
* DIY Finger Food Buffet. We're keeping costs down by asking everyone who attends to bring something tasty to share. There are lots of great cooks in Cheverly ... here's a chance to strut your stuff. Or if you're too busy, bring some cheese and crackers or fruit. We're just happy to see you.
Here are the guidelines for what to bring, made simple by using last names, which we all have:
Last name A - E: Fruits, Cold dishes, and cheeses
Last name F - J: Savory vegetarian dishes
Last name K - O: Savory carnivorous dishes
Last name P - Z: Desserts & sweetness
* DIY Drinks. Drinking liquor? This DYI Prom is BYO ("bring your own") Of course, you are welcome to bring some to share, if you're so inclined. CHVProm will provide ice and mixers. If you want fancy cups, bring those, too. Nothing says classy like fancy cups. Pink champagne in tiny pink cans with pink bendy straws -- the preferred cocktail of CHVchicks -- is entirely acceptable. In fact, we highly recommend it.
Tickets are available through our friends Joseph Pruden and Dan Scott. Checks should be made out to either Joseph or Dan, with "ChvProm 2009" in the memo line. And they're (the tickets, not our friends) cheap: $10 each until May 26, $15 each if you buy May 27-29 (and at the door). Full tables will be sold on a first-come first-serve basis at $100 a table (10 seats...and I think you can decorate your table any way you like, since you're obviously a high roller.) Any funds left over from ticket proceeds will be donated to local non-profit organizations, so you can feel good about doing something fun.
Get out your dancing shoes, dust off your ruffled tux shirt, stop by Landover Liquors and plan your buffet offering. CHVProm is always a highlight of the year in Cheverly, and we want to share it with you. (Shhh!!! I think the CHVchicks might even have some surprises in store...)

Wishing You a Safe & Happy Memorial Day!

Have a great holiday weekend...and see you at the pool (which opens on Saturday at 11:00am and closes in September.)
Last one in is a rotten egg. Or make that first one in, because that water is going to be cold!
(And remember, no trash pickup on Monday...our Public Works crew deserves a break, too!)

CHVProm! CHVProm! CHVProm!

Sometimes, when you really want something to happen, you have to do it yourself. Of course, it helps a lot when your friends want it to happen, too!

Some local curmudgeons said holding a Cheverly Dance this year would not be "sustainable" and decided not to carry on with a much-loved Cheverly tradition, but a group of "prominent and notorious" residents (according to a certain curmudgeon...we'll choose to take that as a compliment this time) fought for their (our) right to party. We fought the law and we won!

We're very pleased to announce CHVProm 2009!

Join your Cheverly friends (and other "prominent and notorious" people, who may become your friends, you never know...) on Friday, May 29, at in the Gym at Cheverly Town Hall. The dance starts at 8:00pm, and, just like Cinderella, turns into a pumpkin at midnight.

The CHVProm Team (remember, we're "prominent and notorious") will provide band, the location, ice, mixers and flatware. This DYI prom will feature:

* Music by Cheverly's very own "prominent and notorious" Beatles cover band Soul Revolver. If you're been lucky (or possibly "prominent and notorious"), you've caught them at local New Year's parties, the Surf Club, or doing good works for a local preschool's Music at School Benefit Series. They're fun, they're loud, they're good citizens, and, I can personally attest, each "prominent and notorious" in their own way.

* DYI Finger Food Buffet. We're keeping costs down by asking everyone who attends to bring something tasty to share. There are lots of great cooks in Cheverly (as evidenced by several long-standing "prominent and notorious" potluck groups) ... here's a chance to strut your stuff. Or if you're too busy (or too "prominent and notorious") bring some cheese and crackers or fruit. That's fine, too.

* DYI Drinks. Drinking liquor? This DYI Prom is BYO ("bring your own") Of course, you are welcome to bring some to share, if you're so inclined. CHVProm will provide ice and mixers. If you want fancy cups, bring those, too. Nothing says classy -- or "prominent and notorious" -- like fancy cups. Pink champagne in tiny pink cans with pink bendy straws -- the preferred cocktail of CHVchicks -- is, by definition, "prominent and notorious". We highly recommend it. For it's prominence and notoriety.

Tickets are available through our "prominent and notorious" friends Joseph Pruden and Dan Scott. Checks should be made out to either Joseph or Dan, with "ChvProm 2009" in the memo line. And they're (the tickets and our "prominent and notorious" friends) cheap: $10 each until May 26, $15 each if you buy May 27-29. Full tables will be sold on a first-come first-serve basis at $100 a table (10 seats...and I think you can decorate your table any way you like, since you're obviously a "prominent and notorious" high roller.) Any funds left over from ticket proceeds will be donated to local non-profit organizations, so you can feel good about doing something fun, no matter how "prominent and notorious" you are, or how "prominent and notorious" your behavior is during prom.

So get out your dancing shoes, dust off your ruffled tux shirt, stop by Landover Liquors and plan your buffet offering. CHVProm is always a highlight of the year in Cheverly, and we want to share it with you. (Shhh!!! I think the CHVchicks might even have some surprises in store...)

Here's an idea...

While our dear friends over at that other fine blog are on about keeping livestock in Cheverly (an idea, by the way, well worth exploring), I'm going to propose another civic idea: Cheverly Volunteer Month. The town should recognize the important efforts that volunteer groups make to improve our neighborhoods -- the great sense of civic pride and responsibility is one of wonderful things about Cheverly. Volunteer groups could use the platform to highlight their efforts and needs for new people. It seems like the same people are always volunteering -- every group can use new faces and new ideas! I really think that if more people were aware of the needs of our community groups, they'd volunteer, too. The best part? It wouldn't cost anything and it could engender a lot of good will. Most of this could take place in the newsletter and on town blogs. I'll even volunteer to coordinate. See? I'm volunteering again.

Volunteerism is something that can be close to home and benefits everyone in the community. National Volunteer Week was celebrated in April ("A Celebration of People in Action"). Maybe next year, Cheverly could precede Peace Month with Volunteer Month?

Got mulch?

The town still has quite a bit of mulch, and they need to distribute it before Cheverly Day (when the St. Ambrose Mens Club needs the space for the beer garden). Cheverly residents can go down to Town Park and get some for themselves, or, for the low, low price of $20, the town will deliver one or two scoops to your home. What a deal! Interested? Visit Trudy in the Public Works offices during normal business hours...she'll be happy to get you set up.

Fun Day at St. Ambrose

Due to all the excitement of the week, we nearly forgot to mention St. Ambrose School's annual Fun Day, which takes place today (May 9) from 11:00am to 3:00pm in the parking lot between the school and church. Lots of food, games, teacher dunk (we hear Cheverly resident and teacher Jim Goeke-Morey will be a featured dunkee), raffle, a cake walk... This year, there's even a new mini Redskins cheerleading camp for mini cheerleaders. The name of the day says it all, folks! See you there!

Cheverly Town Council Election Results

Congratulations to everyone who participated in the Town elections on Monday. Our town is fortunate to have people who are passionate about their community, and who want to work together to strengthen the town. We thank everyone -- especially the polling volunteers and Board of Elections -- who came out.

RESULTS

Ward 1 - Michael Callahan
Ward 2 - Micah Watson
Ward 3 - R. J. Eldridge
Ward 4 - Lee Schachter
Ward 5 - Emily Tevault
Ward 6 - Vernell Johnson

Two things that were cited repeatedly during the campaign were the need for improved, increased communications between the Council and the citizens of Cheverly and increased transparency. Have an idea? See something that could be improved? Have a question? Contact your council member. No response? Contact them again and contact other council members, too. They work for you. Their contact information is in the Cheverly newsletter every month.

We want to congratulate both Ward 2 candidates for a well-fought race. The following emails are from Ward 2 council member Micah Watson and challenger John LeGloahec:
from Councilman Watson:

Thank you to everyone who voted yesterday. Ward Two voters showed up in
numbers three times any other Ward! 159 to be precise. Thank you for the faith
and trust you've put in me for another two years on the Council.I also want to
thank John for running, and for running a positive, decent campaign. Frankly I
did a lot more work than I would've otherwise done! John and I both ran for the
right reasons - to do a good job for the community that we love. While our
motivations are not shared by all candidates for all public offices, there's no
reason Cheverly can't set the standard, and we did just that over the past
month. Job well done all around.

Micah WatsonCouncil Member, Town of Cheverly

from John LeGloahec:

I would like to congratulate Micah as well and thank him for his kind
words. The primary reason that I decided to run was to improve communication
between the residents and the Council. I take Micah at his word that he will be
more responsive to the needs and ideas of the residents of Ward 2. As I met
with residents while campaigning, a number of people all expressed great ideas and
a desire for Cheverly to continue to be a great place to live.I will continue to
update the blog that I have created for Ward 2at
http://cheverlyward 2.wordpress. com/ and will be happy to hear from residents about issues that concern them and to help find answers to questions they have. This is not the time to relax, there is much work to be done. Working together we can achieve everything! My profound thanks to those who voted for me in yesterday's election. I am humbled by the support that I received and promise that I will continue to work for the residents of Ward 2.

What a Great Truck Touch!

Thanks to the many, many people and companies who came together to make the 2009 Truck Touch a great success. Special thanks to CHVchick's very own Katie Troyner, who organizes this event, to the WDN/MDO teachers, Mr. Harry at Cheverly United Methodist Church, intrepid CHVblog reporter Dan Scott, and Charles & Kelly of The Hot Noodles.

Here's a little slide show:

Created with Admarket's flickrSLiDR.

We had a great time whrrling the day (though we noticed that there were a lot of posts about the horns, and some of us think that perhaps a headache medication manufacturer should be approached to sponsor in the future.)

I think we all need a nice, quiet nap.

Truck Touch is Today!

Truck Touch is today! Saturday, May 2 10:00am-2:00pm!
There's a bunch of ... well, trucks! And a police boat and ambulance and a school bus and motorcycles and...

There's also food and music, balloons, games for the kids... this is a great annual event and the weather looks like it's going to cooperate. CHVblog is holding a drawing for a free lawn service (by Emerald Landscapes, thankfully, not the intrepid reporters behind CHVblog.) Stop by the main tent (near the yellow jeep) to enter.

Admission is $3 for kids, adults are free (you might want to stock up on the headache medication of your choice -- it gets a little noisy...). All proceeds benefit the Cheverly Weekday Nursery and Mothers Day Out programs. And remember, say hi to the chvchicks -- we'll be whrrling and twittering throughout the day!
