What's going on in Cheverly this Weekend?

The answer? A lot!

First up, Cheverly Community Market brings you loads of amazing produce and other tasty treats. If you haven't come to the Market, try it! There are tables set up, so you can grab a pastry, a cup of coffee and some fruit, pull up a chair and hang out while you catch up with friends (maybe even make new ones) and listen to the band. I know a lot of Cheverly kids who enjoy a special ice cream/cake pop/pastry breakfast every two weeks! There's a complete list of vendors (and an overview of what they're bringing) on the Market blog.

Saturday night brings Cheverly Swim & Racquet Club's annual Adult Night -- a celebration that was saved this year by you intrepid Cheverly (and surrounding areas) fans of all things fun. Thank you for supporting this special night -- the CHVchicks are looking forward to seeing you at the pool! Tickets are still available -- head down to the pool to purchase yours!
Know of anything else going on in town this weekend? Let us know!

How are you spending your summer?

The CHVchicks are flung far and wide this summer. One is a continent away, one is busy, busy, busy, and two seem to be spending most of their summer at the pool. Personally, I'm trying to make every summer day spent in Cheverly feel like a day spent at the beach.

So what are you doing?

Good news from Micah Watson...

This just arrived from Ward 2 Council Member Micah Watson:

" All: We have a kernel of good news to report from the County Planning Board - they voted yesterday to DENY the special exception sought by Kenilworth Foreign Car Parts to formalize their junk yard just off of Sheriff Road behind Marblewood Street (south of our Metro station, or southwest of Boyd Park. The property is half a block from the Town boundary at Reed St.)

This vote was just the first step towards killing this absurd and destructive idea - so let's not uncork the champagne yet. But progress is progress. Special thanks to Cheverly's Planning Board, Town Administrator David Warrington, Mayor Mosley, Council Member Callahan, Leila Price, Jeannie Robinson, Thelma Boyd-Nash and many other folks inside and outside Town who testified against the special exception or contributed arguments.

Defeating this application is one of the Council's top priorities this spring, and we'll keep the appropriate feet to the fire.

Also, next Thursday June 25 is the regular June Worksession. You can always find the updated agenda here: http://www.cheverly-md.gov/Pages/CheverlyMD_TownAgenda/"

Thanks for sharing this, Micah. Your constituents appreciate being kept in the loop. I love this new area of communication!

Important!

Important, assuming that you like to have fun, that is...
Cheverly Swim & Racquet Club is planning to hold its annual Adult Night on Saturday, June 27, 8:00pm to midnight. Planning is the operative word, because they may cancel if they don't sell 25 tickets by this Wednesday (that's June 17 to you and me.)

This party was cancelled last year -- not enough early registrations, and word isn't out yet that they may cancel again if there aren't enough people signed up by Wednesday. Please don't let that happen for a second year. The party is lots of fun. You don't need to be a member to attend. There's swimming until midnight. All you need to do is hop on over to the pool's front desk, pay them $27 per person (it's a great date night!) and come for a great party on the 27th.

Let's make this happen!
UPDATE: Because of your responses, the people in charge have heard our pleas and extended the deadline! We haven't been able to get word on what that mysterious deadline is, but traditionally, event deadlines at the pool have been the Wednesday prior to the event, which would mean June 24. You still have time to get advance tickets... And thanks to those of you who have already signed up -- we're looking forward to a great night!

Post-Cheverly Day Wrap-Up

What a great day! The weather worked out and everything!
We whrrled the whole day, just for you...

You can also see photos from the day on flickr.

We'd like to extend special thanks to all the people who put together Cheverly Day every year -- it's a huge task. And to our amazing Cheverly Police Department and Department of Public Works, many thankbs. Our community would be nothing without you.

Cheverly Day 2009 Is Here!

Tomorrow -- that's June 6 -- is Cheverly Day, our annual opportunity to celebrate all things Cheverly. Actually, many of us do this every day, but this time it's official!
There's a full day of events (schedule over at Cheverly Day 2009), but we want to draw your attention to a few select -- and very important -- items:

11:30 Food vendors open
12:00pm Beer Gardens open (thanks to the St., Ambrose Men's Club for their annual service)

1:30-2:30pm SOUL REVOLVER on stage (Cheverly's very own Beatles cover band. They've played CHVprom. They've played Weekday Nursery's Music at School Series. They've played The Surf Club (repeatedly...and coming up again on July 3). They've even played special parties in town (we promise we don't have any pictures...)

3:35-4:35pm THE HOT NOODLES on stage (The Hot Noodles have held a special place in Cheverly's heart for years. They're the house band for Cheverly Community Market. They play lots of places...go to the website and see. They love you. They want you to be happy. They will do their very best to bring you as much rock as you can possibly handle. Then they will keep rocking. No kidding.)

9:00pm Fireworks.
Both bands really like it when the audience dances, so bring your kids, your parents, your grandparents, aunts, uncles, co-workers and friends, and DANCE!
The weather is supposed to be great (at long last), so come out to Cheverly Town Park. At least one CHVchick will be whrrling and twittering throughout the day (these are social networking tools, not dances...but you never know, we may have to turn them into dances), so say hi. We want to meet every Cheverly person that we can!

Publick Playhouse

A story on examiner.com reminded us about a great local resource that we don't use often enough: Cheverly Publick Playhouse. Honestly, I've only been there for preschool field trips, but the marquee always features something interesting.

Coming up: Saturday morning movies at Publick Playhouse...June 13 is the last Saturday movie showing until the Fall, and features opening act Mandy the Clown. The movie is "The Rise of the Silver Surfer". 10:00am, $5. What a great deal. The Russian American Kids Circus also comes to the Publick Playhouse in July and the dance party opening benefit for "Shoe-Bert Alley" in August. We'll definitely go!

Check the Publick Playhouse website for details on all performances.

A Fantastic Cheverly Weekend!

You know what makes Cheverly great? The amazing people who live here. We're a town that gets together and makes things happen, whether that means the many community groups, Cheverly Community Market, Cheverly Day, or CHVprom 2009. Time after time, community residents make Cheverly something truly special. Liz and I whrrled CHVprom -- take a gander. And if you were there, please feel free to add your comments to our story!

And get ready...June 6 is Cheverly Day!
