Can you help a Cheverly family help other families?

Cheverly residents Riley Grimes and Ellen Dougherty are about to expand their family! On Thursday, July 30, they'll be leaving for Ethiopia to bring home their new son and daughter - Biruk, almost five, and Netsanet, two-and-a-half. We are very excited about our newest neighbors!

Ellen and Riley received word that Horizon House, the care center in Addis Ababa where the kids are staying, is in great need of infant supplies, and ChvChick hopes that the Cheverly community can help out. Here's how...

The greatest need is for powdered formula (Similac and Enfamil) and liquid vitamin drops, both of which are almost impossible to obtain in Ethiopia. Also needed: disposable diapers (especially preemie/newborn sizes), and Playtex bottles (the kind with the plastic bag liners). Riley and Ellen are happy to transport whatever they can collect.
Can you donate some formula? Vitamins? Bottles or diapers? If any Cheverly neighbors want to donate, Ellen and Riley -- and the children and staff at Horizon House in Addis Ababa -- would be most grateful. Items can be dropped at their house – 5705 Greenleaf Road – between now and Wednesday.
A personal note from Ellen and Riley: "We are incredibly blessed to be welcoming Biruk and Netsanet into our lives – and to be bringing them home to the wonderful and caring community of Cheverly. We thank everyone in advance for their generosity."
If you can donate, please do. It will make a world of difference to a child (and it makes you feel darn good, too!)

Help Local Students

Cheverly resident Ann Barsi has been working to help students at Spellman Elementary prepare for the coming school year. She has compiled a list of supplies for about 30 children (four kids per grade level).

Principal Susan Holiday is delighted by the community response. She said that people are welcome to drop off supplies at the school office any time – please sign
the donation list with your name, contact info and what you are donating. If you’d prefer, you are also very welcome to drop stuff off at Ann's house, 2302 Crestlawn Avenue, and she will deliver everything to the school. The tentative goal is to have everything at the school by August 19th, with school starting the
following week.

The first column shows supplies already purchased (that Ann knows about). The second column shows those amazingly large amounts. The third column represents the quantity of items needed if you had one child in each of the eight grade levels.

Continuing News...

Our town obviously continues to be deeply affected by the senseless loss of life that occurred on July 4th. It has pulled residents together and made us hold the people we love just a little closer. We are heartened to know that locals who don't even know the family of the victim are doing what they can to be of service during this difficult time. Our heartfelt condolences go to the Morris family.

Chief Robshaw of the Cheverly Police Department emphasizes that this was not a random act; you should feel as safe and secure in our neighborhood as you felt on July 3.

Our favorite local blog -- ChvBlog -- continues to do a very thorough, conscientious job of keeping in contact with Chief Robshaw and helping to get accurate information out to the community. We urge you to go to ChvBlog (http://www.chvblog.blogspot.com) to learn the latest information available and find out about how you might be helpful.

July 4th Homicide in Cheverly

As details emerge about the homicide that took place in town on Saturday, ChvBlog has done a great job of keeping in touch with Cheverly Police Department's Chief Buddy Robshaw. CHVchick urges our readers to read through the ChvBlog posts concerning this crime to learn what the police are doing and how you may be able to help. Crime Solvers is offering a $25,000 reward in this case so please help get the word out and contact the police with any information you may have.

The suspect is believed to be a black male, 6' 0" tall, with a thin build and light complexion. The police believe that the original argument that lead to the shooting may have begun at the St. Ambrose basketball court and the victim was returning from that location prior to the shooting. The police have reason to believe that some of our younger Cheverly residents may know the identity of the suspect or may have heard details about the shooting from their friends. They are strongly urging the parents of teenagers to talk to their kids about this and report any information as soon as possible to the police. Have information? Please contact Cheverly Police Department at 301-341-1055 or email the chief at policechief@cheverly-md.gov.

CHVchick also reminds our readers to stick with the facts -- not hearsay -- in discussions with your neighbors and friends. Idle speculation in a case like this will not help, and may even make things worse. It is a trying time for our community, but if we pull together and keep level heads, we'll get through it.

Our deepest condolences go to the family of the victim, 22 year-old Spencer Morris III, of the 3300 block of Cheverly Avenue. Our hearts are with you during this terribly difficult time.
